Biography 

An artist and educator born in Guyana, South America, and raised in Boston, Marlon Forrester (b. 1976, Georgetown, Guyana) makes artworks that take the representations and uses of the Black male body as a central concern. Forrester often employs themes and motifs drawn from basketball culture in paintings, drawings, collages, and multimedia works that explore ideas of transformation and ritual and questions around the mediation of the Black male figure in America. Following an influential return visit to Guyana, Forrester’s work increasingly examines the instability of identity and complex ideas of homeland for individuals of the Caribbean diaspora. Forrester holds a BFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University and a MFA from Yale University. He is a resident artist at the African-American Master Artist Residence Program (AAMARP) at Northeastern University. His work has been exhibited at such venues as University Hall Gallery, UMass Boston; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Edward M. In the aftermath of my mother's passing in 2000, William Pope L emerged as a significant figure among the artists who aided me in finding peace and mindfulness. His work not only inspired me but also introduced groundbreaking methods of expressing oneself through visual art. During that period, some people viewed his art as controversial, given that the public was not accustomed to seeing a black male artist crawling through New York streets or utilizing unique mediums like peanut butter and the Wall Street Journal. Witnessing William Pope L's performance at Prospect in New Orleans, held at my alma mater, Xavier University of Louisiana, filled me with pride. His artistic contributions endure, leaving a lasting impact that resonates even today.

Rising artist Akea Brionne is imagining an Afro-Surrealist world by the sea. In the 27-year-old artist’s mixed-media textile works, lone women, adorned with oversized sunglasses and cinched-waist dresses, stand with pharaonic poise against seascape backdrops while art historical elements such as African masks and De Chirico-esque architecture fill the spaces with uncanny strangeness. 

“I’ve been thinking a lot about my relationship to the loss of knowledge and understanding oneself,” said Brionne during a recent video call. Her works—digitally printed jacquard tapestries that have been filled with doll stuffing and rags—are three-dimensional objects painstakingly adorned with beads. The works have a nearly votive effect. “A lot of this body of work is thinking about water as an elemental force that’s moved me to different places—I’ve moved from New Orleans to California to Maryland and Michigan, and Missouri in my life already. I think of these works as taking place in a dreamscape. Lately, I have been having these vivid dreams occurring by the ocean or where the desert and the ocean collide,” she explained. 

Right now, a dozen of these work are on view in the solo exhibition “Trying to Remember” at Detroit’s Library Street Collective (through January 6), a show that contemplates how colonialism has shaped and changed the storytelling, memory, and assimilation of the African diaspora both in the United States and the Caribbean—but specifically through Brionne’s familial experiences. 

The exhibition is an important inflection point for the rapidly rising art world talent. This November, Forbesmagazine named Brionne one of their ’30 Under 30′ in arts and culture. Her works have been exhibited by the Brooklyn Museum, the Mississippi Museum of Art, and the Baltimore Museum of Art in the past few years. This year, in Miami, Library Street Collective presented her works at Untitled Art Fair. In early 2024, Brionne will have her debut New York solo exhibition with Lyles & King as well as a presentation at Frieze LA 2024.

“ Abdulrahman Adesola Yusuf, the artist also known as Arclight, recalls growing up in a Lagos characterized largely by systemic issues and economic inequality. Despite this, he says the very same city contained boundless optimism. Capturing that contradiction has become his motive and the city, his muse – combining dark thematic undertones with vibrant colors to portray Lagos’ unique identity in his collages.

Yusuf describes his own distinctive style as a mix of surrealism, pop and figurative art. An introspective artist, he also sees his collage work as a version of journaling, albeit one done publicly, and shared in a way that might connect others with similar ideas or experiences. “It creates that kind of open conversation and a community,” he said.
