Notes:
In the aftermath of my mother's passing in 2000, William Pope L emerged as a significant figure among the artists who aided me in finding peace and mindfulness. His work not only inspired me but also introduced groundbreaking methods of expressing oneself through visual art. During that period, some people viewed his art as controversial, given that the public was not accustomed to seeing a black male artist crawling through New York streets or utilizing unique mediums like peanut butter and the Wall Street Journal. Witnessing William Pope L's performance at Prospect in New Orleans, held at my alma mater, Xavier University of Louisiana, filled me with pride. His artistic contributions endure, leaving a lasting impact that resonates even today.
